What does upskill mean?

Upskilling this is the opportunity to let your employees to acquire new skills needed to progress in the business or field. Maybe an employee has the abilities to become a manager, or the skills to join another area in the business; these qualifications will help to ensure that they reach their full potential.

Some of the most common skills that can be improved through upskilling can include digital, analytical, organisational and much more.

Why is Upskilling so important?

With more and more companies relying on technology and computer systems to help the business run smoothly, it means that not everyone is up to date with the latest systems or software’s. Up-skilling can be a great way to teach employees about these new strategies and ensure that they have the skills to help them move with the business.

Giving your staff additional training also means that they are able to take on additional responsibilities in the workplace in a time efficient manner.

40% of employees who receive poor job training leave their positions within the first year and in 2016, 68% of workers said that training and development is the most important workplace policy.

Recent findings suggest that 1 in 3 people leave their organisation in the first year. Without staff being engaged in their day-to-day tasks they are more likely to leave their role earlier. Training is a great way to engage your staff and keep them focused and interested in their work.

Give existing employees the chance to succeed

Somebody leaves your business meaning that you have a new position to fill; the first thought that comes to mind is to start searching for a new employee from the outside. However, one of your employees has had an interest in that role for some time and does have the potential to progress into that position; Upskilling your team means that you save time on hunting for new employees and also keep staff retention.

Staff that are lacking motivation, feeling undervalued or as though they aren’t progressing need a form of motivation to improve morale – providing them with the opportunity to acquire a great qualification can have a huge impact on their work satisfaction, and as a result, on your staff retention.
